Our July YSA activity was a career fair. We had three speakers from three different professions talk about what was required to be qualified for their job.
Then we had a career assessment paper that each YSA filled out. It was meant to be an opportunity to really ask themselves if they are self-reliant in the following areas: temporal, financial, spiritual and social. The spacing on this assessment gets all goofed up when viewed on the blog. So each statement has the numbers 0,1,2,3 on the top above, Not at all, Occasionally, Most of the time and Almost Always. At the end of the process, we asked them to add up their points and if they had a score of 14 in each category, they could consider themselves pretty self-reliant. If you copy and paste it in your computer, the spacing will print out correctly.

We had refreshments and handed out the following identity scavenger hunt. Each YSA had to walk around the group and find another person who fit the description. They could not use any name more than once. They were talking and interacting with each other in a frenzy to get all of them filled out. It was a hit!
Identity Scavenger hunt You must write the person’s name next to the
description and be first to complete them all to win.

We did not play this activity because we were short on time, but will use it another time as an ice-breaker.
Observation Activity
· Divide the group in half facing each
other in a long parallel line. Each side is a team. The person across from you is
now your partner.
· The participants get 30 seconds to
observe their partner and notice every detail about them. Then both partners turn around for another 30
seconds and change something about their appearance; change watch, jewelry,
hair, etc.
· Once time is up, they turn around
and try to guess what changed about their partner; the person who notices first
and points it out, wins.
· The scoring for the team is kept for
each entire side. The team with the highest
number of winners wins that round. One side
of the line moves two to the left, 2 people on the end move to the other end of
the line, and play begins over with a new partner. After five rounds, whatever teams wins three
times first, wins.
At the ready, waiting for the flip!
We played cops and cooks. It was a hit! The YSA's loved it and after being inside for the career fair, enjoyed the outside activities.
Cops and Cooks
· Divide into two equal groups facing each other in a long
parallel line.
· Extend arms until
fingertips touch. That’s where you
stand.
· Place two ropes twenty five feet behind each line of
participants.
· A facilitator flips a coin, heads is Cops, and tails is Cooks.
· When the flip is called (either Cops or Cooks), the team
called pursues the opposite team as they turn and run behind their rope line
(safety) before being tagged.
· One Cop or one Cook can touch multiple players on the
opposite team.
· Once tagged, participants become part of the team of their
captors; becoming either Cops or Cooks.
· Continue until all players are Cops or Cooks.
Here's an additional ice-breaker activity:
Team awareness activity
Split the group into equal
teams of three or four people.
· Issue each person a pen/pencil and
four note-sized pieces of paper, or four sticky-notes - 3-5 inches wide.
· Write your own name on one of the
notes (in plain block handwriting which cannot be identified to you or
identified as matching, capital block letters, write each one in slightly
different writing)
· Write clearly three words -
one on each note - which strongly describes or represents you. (hidden
from another’s view)
1.
-can be personality characteristics, such as determined,
diplomatic, reserved, confident, friendly, etc., and/or more symbolic words
such as music, football, mountain, adventure, family, etc., which represent a very significant personal characteristic.
2. -try to use words which genuinely and
honestly represent you.
· Write your name and the three
selected descriptive words on an additional, separate, hidden note you keep on
your person.
· Place all name and describer notes
face down in the center of your group space and mix them up.
· Ask the teams to stand and move to
another team's space so that they are working with another team's names and
describers.
· The task for each team is to
re-arrange the describers in sets of three beneath the appropriate name note, correctly
allocating the describers to the 'owners'.
· The winning team is the one which achieves the
most correctly allocated describers.
